Easy Firewood from Free Pallets
Wood heat is an excellent way to heat your home, but it usually means breaking your back or breaking the bank. Cutting up wood pallets is an excellent alternative to cordwood, especialy if its free.
I cut my firewood pallets in the most efficient way I know of. Using a handheld circular saw, I cut the "planks" along the edge of each "runner" so that I get two approx. 16" long pieces from each "plank" (I am calling the flat, 1/2" thick pieces "planks" and the larger, 2x4 size pieces "runners"). I then cut the runners into three equal lengths with a chop saw. This can also be done with a chainsaw. Be watchful of nails while you are cutting, and wear hand and eye protection. The only drawback to this method is that the nails that hold the pallets together are still in the wood. You will occasionally have to clean these nails out of your fireplace. Another method to take apart pallets is by prying the planks and runners apart with a hammer and crowbar. This method is much more labor intensive.
Using pallets as firewood makes sense for many reasons. One, pallets are free. Two, cutting up pallets is easier than cutting, splitting and stacking timber firewood. Three, since the wood from pallets has already been used for shipping purposes, using it as firewood is more environmentally friendly than using virgin timber.
As compared to traditional cordwood, there are a few drawbacks to burning pallet wood. The biggest is that pallet wood tends to burn up faster, so more wood is required. Also, pallet wood does not have the aesthetic value that split timber does. You will have to weigh the advantages and disadvatages of burning pallets for heat to see if it works for you.
I encourage you to use pallet wood to heat your home. Just think, the stacks of old pallets you see behind businesses could be heating your home for free this winter.
