Alternative Ways of Heating Your Home
You can beat high heating bills with a wood burning stove or pellet stove.
Pellet stoves are freestanding stoves that burn tiny compressed wood pellets to create heat. The pellets are loaded into a the top of the stove, which is called the hopper. A corkscrew shaped device called an auger moves the pellets to the burning chamber. A blower forces the air out of the chamber and provides heat. Pellet stoves cost $1200 to $3000. Installation costs usually range from $100 to $300.
Wood Burning Insert
A wood burning insert is a ceramic or metal stove that is placed into an existing fireplace. Wood is burned inside the stove and creates heat. It is much more efficient than a standard fireplace because it contains a door that increases the combustion rate. Most models have a blower, while other models rely on radiant heat. Wood burning inserts cost $1200 to $2200. Installation costs vary but can cost $500 to $1000 depending on the condition and size of the chimney.
Cost of Heat
Both pellet stoves and wood burning stoves essentially use a form of wood as the source of heat. Wood is a renewable source of energy , is very abundant, and is cost efficient. It is sold by the "cord" which is a standard measurement of stacked wood. A cord of wood costs $100 to $200 depending on the type of wood. The average 2000 square foot home will use between 2 to 3 cords of wood per year.
A pellet stove burns tiny wood pellets. These pellets are sold in bags and can be purchased from specialty stores. The average cost of wood pellets is approximately $250 for a ton. A 2000 square foot home will use about two tons per season.
A wood burning insert and pellet stove will need to be restocked. The major disadvantage of a wood burning insert is that it will need to be refilled every few hours. It usually will not burn through the night without restocking the wood at least once. Pellet stoves on the other hand, can burn several days without adding more pellets. Larger models can run up to 65 hours on a low setting without the need to refuel. The ashes will need to be cleaned from both the wood inset and pellet stove everyday.
