Facts About Propane

Propane is a gas fuel that can very easily convert into the liquid format for the purposes of transportation. It can be used as a fuel in portable stoves, barbecues, central heating systems and engines.

The gas that we use at home which is normally referred to as the LP or LPG is made from a combination of propane, butylenes, propylene and butane. Like all the other hydrocarbons, this gas burns in the presence of oxygen and thus forms gaseous carbon dioxide and liquid water only. It is a very dense gas, which sinks to the ground when in raw, unrefined state and is about 1.5 times heavier than the air. It has high potent for energy, producing 91 mega joules per cubic meter in full combustion.

Physical properties of propane

Propane is a three-molecule alkane, which is non-poisonous. It can cause asphyxiation when inhaled directly. High use of commercial products increases the chances of getting asphyxiation. The combustion of propane is clean and the carbon-to-carbon bonds plus the covalent bonds of butylenes and propylene, is known to produce organic exhausts. The gas burns in air with a clear, noon-sooty flame.

It comes third in auto fuel after gasoline and diesel. Propane can be used as a liquid state fuel in vehicles just like auto gas. It has recently endeared itself to many users because of its quick refills, cleaner handling and the increasing nature of its cost-effectiveness.

Propane is an offshoot of the processing of two natural gases products- the refining of petroleum and gas processing. The process involves extraction of large volumes of together with propane. Another method that can lead to production of propane is the refinery of crack petroleum. Using propane as an alternative source of energy has numerous advantages, among them cutting the cost of fuel bills as well as being among the most environmental friendly sources of energy.

Safety

The federal government considers propane a safe energy fuel that can be used to power vehicles. The propane vehicle tanks are among the safest, being a massive 20 times as resistant to puncture as methanol, ethanol or gasoline. Its other big or safety advantage is that it is the least flammable of methanol and ethanol.

USA is the chief producer

About 88% of the domestic propane that w e use in America is manufactured here at home, over 70% of which comes from processing natural gas this forms a very solid natural gas reserve for the US. Canada is the next biggest propane producer and produces America with over 75% of propane that it imports.

Suppl

Over 97 % of propane that the US uses comes from the North American continent, 88% of which comes from within the US.

Precaution of over-refilling

Ever since the year 1984, a law was brought into force demanding that all propane tanks have devices that stops the filling process once the level of the liquid propane hits the 80% mark.
