How to Install a Wood Stove

Of course, before deciding to install the stove, you will want to find out how it will affect your home owner's insurance.

Learn the fire codes in your area regarding fire safety for a wood stove.

If you live in a remote or rural area, this type of zoning or fire codes may not be an issue. However, in some towns or cities, stick guidelines are often in force to assure that wood stoves are installed correctly and with adequate fire prevention techniques and materials. You could be required to upgrade the drywall or other materials near where the stove will sit. This may include the type of flooring allowed in the vicinity of the wood stove. Extra smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher nearby may be mandatory also.

Consult with your dealer regarding the size stove to buy for the amount of space to be heated.

Wood stoves work in several different ways. So, it is important to know what you can expect in the way of heat output from a particular unit. Most modern wood stoves have thermostat controlled damper systems to raise and lower the amount of heat generated by the wood. These are coupled with forced air that may work like a space heater or utilize duct work to function like a central heating system. Some stoves install inside the house. Others sit outside the house in heavily insulated boxes and act as a wood furnace. Fans blow the heat through underground ducts into the house.

Installing an inside wood stove is not too difficult once you understand the local requirements.

Start the job by making any material adjustments to the walls, floor, and ceiling to meet legal requirements, if any. Next, check with the recommendations of the stove manufacturer about clearance needs for the stove. Regardless of local codes, you will want to put a fireproof mat under the stove or replace the flooring with slate or stone. The same is true of nearby walls. A port has to be installed either in the ceiling or the nearest wall for the stove pipe to pass through. There are specialized implements to serve this purpose.

Get enough stove pipe to reach beyond the peak of your roof.

For proper ventilation for the stove, it is recommended that your chimney reach above the peak of your roof. You may choose to build a chimney on the exterior of your house out of specialized concrete blocks that are lined with tiles. By doing this, you are able to greatly reduce your fire hazard. Just make sure that you leave a port at the bottom of the column for cleaning purposes. Place a cap on the top of the chimney to prevent rain, birds, squirrels, and other undesirable things from getting inside.

Place the stove in the selected place inside the house.

Position the stove in a safe area of the house. You will want to be able to restrict small children and pets from having easy access to the stove if this is a potential problem. Using double walled insulated stove pipe with the proper fittings, run the pipe from the stove to the chimney or through the ceiling and attic to the proper height. Stove pipe has elbows that are adjustable into other than 90 degree turns. Most good quality stove pipe slips together at the joints and can be rotated to lock into place. If you pipe does not do this, use self-tapping screws to fasten it securely together. You may have to drill small holes to start the screws.

Depending on the type of stove, you may need to bolt it to the floor.

Some stoves are intended to be free standing space heaters. Because the contracting and expanding metal can make a stove walk or move some, it can be a good idea to firmly secure the stove to your floor. Once the stove is hooked to the vent and fastened in place, make sure that the grate and damper system are functional. If a thermostat is needed, wire it into place.

Build a small fire in the stove.

Watch the fire and make sure that the smoke is being drawn up the chimney. Go outside and look for smoke to exiting the pipe. There should be no smoke leaking inside or outside of the house from the pipe. If there is, you will need to get some sealant and seal up the leak. There are special products made just for this purpose. If all is working fine, build a bigger fire and enjoy your heat.
