Transformers Fans Invade Dallas for Annual BotCon
Thousands of fans invaded the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, TX for the 2020 Transformers BotCon. The event offered enthusiasts the opportunity to meet voice actors from the different TV shows and movies including Optimus Prime himself, Peter Cullen.
The Hyatt Regency in Dallas, TX played host to what some innocent bystanders might have thought was an invasion by an alien robot force. Thousands of fans crowded the hotel for the 2020 Transformers BotCon. Many of them came dressed up as their favorite characters from the franchise.
The annual convention takes place every year in different cities throughout the United States. The toy robots launched in 1984, spawning 28 years of products, TV shows, movies, video games, and comic books to celebrate. There's plenty for enthusiasts of Transformers to celebrate.
This year's event included guest appearances from many different corners of the Transformers Universe. There were voice actors from the animated TV shows and movies like Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee in "Transformers: The Animated Series Generation 1"), Buster Jones (Blaster in "Transformers: The Animated Series Generation 1"), Gary Chalke (Optimus Prime in "Transformers: Armada"), and David Kaye (Optimus Prime and Megatron in "Transformers: Animated").
Original Optimus Prime "Generation 1" voice actor Peter Cullen was even in attendance. He is the most well-known of the actors, having lent his voice to Michael Bay's three blockbuster movies, several video games, and the newest animated series "Transformers Prime." Cullen shared about his experiences at the many BotCons he's attended.
"From the very first BotCon I ever did, I was quite amazed. The appreciation and the acknowledgement of the show and the character was an eye opener for me. I literally had a jaw dropping experience when I saw and felt the reception. A primary reason for my returning to these (is to) just show the appreciation I have for the fans that are out here and have shown such great loyalty over the years. It's a very humbling experience," Cullen stated.
Michael Verret , Hasbro's Senior Manager for Global Marketing for Transformers, was also in attendance. He was helping to man a booth promoting the new action figures the toy manufacturer is releasing. He shared his thoughts on the experience of BotCon.
"This year marks the 18th Annual Botcon. and I have to tell you the experience is living up to all our expectations. (They're) exceeding them in a lot of cases," Verret declared.
Several manufacturing sponsors besides Hasbro also attended to showcase their newest items hitting stores. Activision, KREO, and IDW Publishing were among them.
Matt Tieger is the Game Director at High Moon Studios who developed Activision's newest video game "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron." He gave a live demo of the game to hundreds of enthusiasts crowding a small stage adorned by two video screens.
"It's this fantastic show where the most hardcore of the hardcore Transformers fans and people who just love the brand (show up). I really enjoy coming here and showing off what we're doing," Tieger shared.
IDW Publishing releases several different comic books featuring the "Robots in Disguise." IDW's Senior Editor John Barber was in attendance greeting fans and talking to them about the different titles he handles as overseer of the Transformers comic brand.
"If you would have told me when I was 8 it would be so much bigger in 2020, I wouldn't have believed you. It's become something the fans have helped mold and turn into something new and different," Barber related.
Not only can fans meet their favorite celebrities, but they can also do some shopping and find items they might not have the opportunity to pick up in their local areas. Dozens of different vendors sold everything from old vintage collectibles to car accessories, t-shirts, and hats donning the logos of the Transformers. There was even one booth selling old directions and the cardboard packaging for the toys.
Director of the Transformers Collector's Club and BotCon event organizer Brian Savage described why he continues doing the events.
"I think this group of people is culturally diverse. (It's an event where fans) can come and feel included. It's like a giant Transformers group hug every year when they all come here," Savage shared.
