Five of the Best Portable Water Filtration Products for Doomsday Preppers
Having access to clean, filtered water can be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.
One of the biggest concerns for doomsday preppers is having drinkable water. Whether there is a natural disaster, contamination or a bio-weapon attack, without water you aren't going to last long. There are a lot of different portable water purification kits and filters on the market but finding the one that is going to be best for you and your family requires some research.
Before you start shopping for a portable filtration kit you need to invest in water testers. There are some things that filters can not process so you need to know what you are working with before you start the filtering process. You can read some great water filtering primers online and there are a lot of conventions that have demos of them as well as vendors with samples.
Water Purification Tablets: One of the least expensive and easiest to use products for purifying water is water treatment tablets. These are iodine tablets that can be added to water to make it drinkable in 30 minutes. They are only intended to be used for emergency situations or until a clean source of water can be obtained. Most of these are in the $5.00 range for a package of 50 tablets and they all come with instructions and lists of what they will and will not safeguard against.
Personal Water Filter Straws: These are ideal for being on foot in an emergency because they are small and can be used by anyone. The filter in the barrel of the straw purifies the water but there are limitations to what they can remove from the water as well as how long they can last. To use just put the base into the water, allow it to work its way through the tube and use a clean bowl or container to catch the clean water. You can drink directly from the tube if you want but if you want to have water to take with your, use a clean container instead of putting your mouth on the end of the tube.Personally I didn't like the feel of most of them when I tried them; they are easy to use but I prefer to see the water before I drink it just to give it one final check.
Microfilter System: While a little more expensive than other comparable products, you will get the best tasting water from something that has a dual filter system to it. This can take longer to set up and prime but if you want the best taste then the extra ten to fifteen minutes will be well spent. The perk to this type of set up is that you get a much better housing; it will stand up to more use as well as packing and unpacking. The only con to this is that you can't see into the well of most of these systems to see when it is full. I have tried several of these and prefer the ones that are marketed towards hikers and day-packers because of the portability and the way that you can easily repack it when moving on.
Water Purification Bottles: These are one of my least favorite products but oddly are one of the most popular for preppers to stock up on. Unless you are spending upwards of $20.00 on a bottle with a contained filter you aren't going to like the feel of them. The ones that I have used in the past have all felt a little too thin and seemed like they would be damaged easily if they were packed incorrectly. You can get a price break if you buy multi packs but you are going to want to read the specifics about them and how many times they can be used before the filters need replaced.I had a chance to try out some bottles at conventions and liked most of them but they are not for high volume filtering so you are going to need to have enough of them for everyone in your family.
Portable Water Purifier Filter: These are pump based filters that are excellent for pumping from a water source such as a lake or stream. This is not battery powered so you have to make sure that you are going to have the arm strength to operate this. The biggest perk to this type of filter pump is that you can filter up to 500 gallons of water with it but it is extremely small and lightweight. Look at spending about $80.00 on one but if you have the chance to try one out first, do so. Not everyone is going to like this type of pump filter but for the money it is going to deliver the absolute highest volume of clean drinkable water with the smallest filter body. If you have some type of shelter that you are going to be using, this is a sound investment as a back up water filtration product.
Regardless of which type of portable water filtration system you go with you have to know the limitations, specs and replacement options. Some are one-time-use items so when the red dot appears on the side there is no way to replace the filtration cartridge whereas others have filters that are replaceable. These are things that you need to factor in to your buying decision. Also consider the number of people that you are going to need water for, if you live in a high-risk area for water contamination and your local water points such as rivers, steams and creeks.
I have purchased several small portable water filtration products; I am not a hard core prepper but I have built up a decent sized cache of emergency supplies, long-storage food products and ammunition. I went with Aqua Vessel Tritan Filter Water Bottle ($22.99) which can filter up to 100 gallons of water but is small, portable and well made. For larger water filtration I opted to go with a 4 liter water bladder that has the capability of filtering and purifying the entire 4 liter hold. This can be used over and over and is suitable for camping, hiking or in emergency situations where you are at home but without clean water.
