My Mother and the Gas Stove

The author describes her mother's unsafe practices with their gas stove as her reason for having an electric stove in her own home.

I have stayed away from having a gas stove, even though people rave about the ease and accuracy of gas stove cooking. Electric ovens are superior for baking, so I have been told. If I had a gas stove, it would have to be one that had an electric oven feature because I love to bake. When I bought my house 13 years ago, I did not cook on the gas stove that was already in place. I waited for an electrician to put in a 220 volt outlet, so I could install my electric range. The truth is, I have a fear of gas stoves, and I have a reason for that fear.

My mother was not just an excitable woman who overreacted. She was also somewhat absent-minded, particularly about using our gas cook stove. In those days, ignitors in stoves were somewhat less abundant or reliable. A match needed to be used in particular to light the oven, as well as the burners. We had boxes of wood kitchen matches throughout the house. Sometimes my older brothers would take those boxes of matches for lighting cigarettes, and my mother had to search for the matches. Other times, she just got busy and forgot to light the pilot light in the oven.

We also had an old-fashioned wood cooking stove, and she was a much more proficient and safer cook on that. She used that unfailingly in the cool and cold months for baking. She made excellent meals on the wood stove top. Many a lovely sweet donut came from a Dutch oven filled with hot cooking fat on top of that wood cook stove, where dough was fried until golden brown and tender. It also kept the house warm in winter, unlike the gas stove.

My mother frequently lit the match after considerable gas had accumulated inside the oven, and depending on how much gas was in there, a small or bigger boom was created. The booms were always unsettling, and a few times were large enough to be downright frightening. Sometimes, the top of the stove blew open, and had to be resettled in place. If I was in the house, this blowing up of the stove was terrifying.

One autumn day, when I was eight or nine, I was outside playing on the side of the ditch bank, when I heard a boom louder than normal coming from inside the house. The windows rattled in the house and the noise made the cattle bray. I was nervous about going inside the house, but eventually I did.

This time, my mother had blown the top completely off the stove, though it and the stove seemed relatively undamaged. My mother probably fared better than she could have. She said her eyelashes and eyebrows had been singed by the gas flame that had shot out at her as she bent in to light the oven. Her eyelashes eventually grew back, but her eyebrows were permanently damaged. She did better from then on about having the match ready when she turned on the gas, but you know what they say about horses and barn doors. It was a little too late, insofar as I was concerned, to save the horse. It was too late to save my mother's eyebrows, at any rate.

I have been afraid of gas stoves ever since then, and no advancements in gas stove technology have made me feel any better about their safety. No kind of cook surface is completely safe, but for now, I will stick with electric. I have an electric hot water heater and clothes dryer, just to be on the safe side. If I could afford it, I would go with electric heat, too.
