BWE Beats the Winter Blues
Big Walnut elementary is participating in a new form of indoor recess which promotes fitness and fun. This is designed as a new way to keep kids active when they can not play outdoors during recess due to the weather.
The teachers and parents of Big Walnut Elementary have banded together with Otterbein College to melt away the "indoor recess blues"! Lead by BW parent and Otterbein instructor of Health and Sport Sciences, Amanda Rammelsburg, Otterbein students have volunteered to create a whole new twist on indoor recess beginning Monday, January 14th.
"The goal is to keep kids active, keep them moving and having fun when the weather does not allow outdoor recess," explained Rammelsburg, who had previously responded to this need with a trial-run before Winter Break. "The response was great. The kids had been inside for awhile and were relieved and excited."
So when Otterbein classes commenced in the New Year, Rammelsburg enlisted the aid of students majoring in Physical Education or Health Promotion and Fitness to gain not only experience in their field, but also a chance for independent study credit by organizing activities for Big Walnut Elementary. Together they, with parental volunteers, have created a schedule promoting fun and fitness to last the long winter weeks.
The idea formed when teachers asked the BWE PTO to approve the purchase of fitness videos to be shown in individual classrooms during recess time when the kids had to stay inside due to the weather. As a parent, Amanda Rammelsburg saw the need for further steps to be taken, and as an instructor, knew the college students would love the experience. "With the issues of obesity in America, kids need activities that not only get them up and moving, but are fun. These activities are organized by students to be age-appropriate and are meant to promote participation," she said.
Student participation is not mandatory; they could choose to stay in their classrooms during recess to draw and play games. But for those who do so, they would be missing out on all sorts of fun activities! The list includes, but is not limited to: sports drills, stretching, calisthenics and yoga, to cardio kick-boxing (no contact!) for the older students and the Hokey-Pokey and the Chicken Dance for the youngsters.
For each day, three different grades will have the opportunity to participate for 20 minutes each. Mondays and Wednesdays are 11:50am-12:50pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays are 12-1pm, with activities taking place in the lobby. All teachers will have received the proper schedules for each grade.
"Our goal is to run through winter, with the Otterbein students participating through Winter Quarter to Spring Break. It all depends on how well it works and on how positive the impact," said Rammelsburg. As for other schools looking for similar relief for their students during these cold winter days, Rammelsburg said "We hope to set an example, to promote wellness and fitness and to inspire other schools to prioritize physical education."
