New Vaccine Offers Hope to Stop Malaria
The new malaria vaccine known as RTS,S/AS02D, was evaluated for its safety and efficiency
The new malaria vaccine known as RTS,S/AS02D, was evaluated for its safety and efficiency. Very early encouraging results were obtained with as much as a 65% reduction in risk of new infection in vaccinated newborn, the study says.
More than 200 newborns (ages 10 and 18 months) received a full three-dose course of the RTS,S/AS02A vaccine during this clinical trial. All children were from a rural area in southern Mozambique, Africa.
Among these 214 trial participants, 62 percent fewer new cases of the disease were seen. In addition, children who received at least one dose experienced 35% less cases of the malaria disease.
A previous study conducted in 2022 children (ages 1-4 years) had shown that the RTS,S/AS02A vaccine was safe and well tolerated.
Since this is a Phase II clinical trial more studies are being planned to fully investigate the safety and effectiveness of the new vaccine candidate RTS,S/AS02D. A large trial is expected to begin late next year.
The new trial will be a full phase III study involving seven countries (in Africa) and more than 15 thousand children, the study says.
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa.
Malaria is caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium. The most serious forms of the disease are caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.
Female mosquitoes transmit malaria parasites. Malaria symptoms include anemia (light headedness, shortness of breath, tachycardia etc.), as well as fever, chills, nausea, flu-like illness, and in severe cases, coma and death.
The new malaria vaccine does not work alone. It needs to be co-injected with hepatitis B vaccine. It seems that the new vaccine fuses with the hepatitis B virus (present in the vaccine) and induces a response from the human body (recognizing it as a threat). Blood T-cells do their job by attacking both the malaria parasite and the hepatitis virus (if present).
This new vaccine certainly offers new hope for countries were malaria is a health hazard such as many African countries. If the vaccine proves to be efficient in future phase III trials it could become a national issue for those countries.
Large massive immunization campaigns together with preventive control measures to reduce mosquitoes proliferation (such as DDT fumigations---allowed by WHO in Malaria infected countries) will possible and eventually eradicate the Malaria disease in many countries.
