How to Build Fragrant Fire in Fireplace or Wood Stove
For a fragrant fire, begin with the right type of wood, then toss in some of these homemade fragrant pinecones.
Begin With Fragrant Hard Wood
Start a fragrant fire by using wood that is naturally aromatic, such as hickory, cherry or ash. Ash wood permeates the indoor air with a slight fragrance, hickory and cherry wood take the fragrance level up a notch. Whatever type of wood used to build a fire, make certain the wood is dry and has been aged for at least six months. Fresh cut wood burns unevenly, produces smoke and an unpleasant odor, just the opposite of what you're trying to achieve.
Fragrant hard wood chips can usually be purchased at the same place fire wood is sold. Wood chips from hickory or fruit trees can be added to fire to produce fragrance. If a you (or a friend) has fruit trees, always save the non-diseased branches pruned from the fruit tree in the spring. Fruits trees like the apple and cherry produce fragrant wood that can be used to add flavor to grilled food during the summer and fragrance to indoor fires in the winter.
How To Make Scented Pinecones
Go on a scavenger hunt outdoors anywhere pine trees grow (or visit a local craft store) and pick up a sack full of pinecones for this simple and fragrant craft project.
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper, then lay a single layer of pinecones on the parchment paper, about one-half inch apart. Bake pinecones in a 225 degree oven for 25 minutes or until they feel dry to the touch. Watch pinecones carefully during the 25 minute baking time, because the pitch in pinecones can ignite at high temperatures.
When the pinecones are dry, remove from oven and allow to cool, then sprinkle them with several drops of essential oils, like cinnamon, cloves or balsam. Place pinecones in an airtight plastic storage bin or large Ziploc bag and shake to evenly distribute the fragrant essential oil. Keep container sealed until a fragrant fire is desired, then place a few fragrant pinecones in a decorative basket near the fire place or wood stove and toss a pinecone onto the fire occasionally for a warming fragrance that will fill the room.
