How to Clean a Wood Burning Stove
A clean wood burning stove is both efficient and safe.
The first step to clean a wood burning stove is to disconnect the stove exhaust pipe, taking it outside of the home to be cleaned inside with a stiff brush to loosen and remove soot. The stove exhaust pipe can then be reattached to the wood burning stove and cleaning efforts can then be directed to the inside of the stove's body.
Making certain that the stove has not been in use for at least 48 hours, scoop or shovel the ashes from the wood burning stove bottom and dispose of them safely. Next, using a hard bristle brush or metal scrapper clean the side walls of the wood burning stove's interior removing as much soot as is possible, and again remove the unwanted ashes. Using either a piece of coarse steel wool or sandpaper, remove any remaining soot on the stove walls by rubbing vigorously and wipe the inside of the wood burning stove with a dry cloth. The glass door on a wood burning stove also needs to be cleaned if present, and this can be accomplished by using a small piece of very fine steel wool and a few squirts of window cleaner followed by drying with a clean soft cloth.
The last step to clean a wood burning stove is to clean the catalytic combuster. If the combuster can be easily removed do so, and then clean it with a brush and wipe it afterward with a cloth. If it is difficult to remove gently brush the combuster and use a vacuum cleaner to pick up any fallen debris. It is always a smart move to test a wood burning stove after cleaning by starting a small fire to make certain any components that have been removed in the cleaning process are properly reattached and are fully operational.
