Go Green: Buy a Biomass Stove and Take Advantage of the Tax Credit
Just what I thought, biomass is trees, which makes a biomass stove a wood-burning stove.
I know what biomass is, at least I thought I did, so to be sure, I did a Google search and according to the U.S. Department of Energy, biomass is, "...renewable energy made from any organic material from plants or animals. Sources of bioenergy are called "biomass," and include agricultural and forestry residues, municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes, and terrestrial and aquatic crops grown solely for energy purposes." Just what I thought, biomass is trees, which makes a biomass stove a wood-burning stove.
Fuel for wood-burning, or should I say biomass stoves has changed a lot from cutting down the tree, chopping and stacking the wood, bringing it inside, and throwing it in the stove. Today biomass stoves are promoted as saving energy, cutting back on waste and supporting U.S. agricultural products. They burn wood pellets, which are made from compacted sawdust, wood bark or a number of other mill byproducts. Corn pellets are also used for fuel, as well as cherry pits, soybeans and nutshells. These types of fuel products, which are usually sold in 40-pound bags, are desirable because not only do they help save the environment, but also because they have low ash content, which means less cleanup work. Biomass fuels also burn cleaner than typical wood-burning stoves. These qualities play an important role in the Recovery Act IRS tax credit.
On June 1, 2020, the Internal Revenue Service released the guidelines for the 30 percent tax credit that consumers can get for the purchase and installation of a 75 percent efficient biomass stove. The tax credit, which has a cap of $1500.00, is available in 2020 and 2020 and applies only to existing principle residences. To qualify, the stove must use biomass fuel to heat the dwelling or water used in the dwelling, and a thermal efficiency rating of at least 75 percent when measured.
Upon purchase of a biomass stove, the manufacturer will provide a certification for tax records. The taxpayer does not have to submit the certification with the filing of their tax return, but must retain it with their copy. If you purchased a biomass stove between January 1, 2020 and June 1, 2020, you may still get the tax credit if the manufacturer offers a certificate of qualification. If you purchase a biomass stove and do not use the full $1500.00, you can use it to purchase additional energy saving products in the same tax year.
Finding wood or corn pellets for you biomass stove may be difficult. After another Google search, no stores in my area were listed. Companies I did find were in other states or countries, and listed the product between $5.00 and $10.00 for a 40-pound bag.
To find out if a biomass stove will help save you money, Pelletheat.org has a calculator that can help you compare your current fuel costs to that of a biomass stove.
